Nick Bessette in Ecuador: Muy Chevere

This summer, I was extremely privileged to be able to be able to embark on a trip to Ecuador for five weeks through the Experiment in International Living. The Wilson Language Grant allowed me to pursue my interests of the Spanish language over the summer while traveling in a beautiful, mountain-lined country such as Ecuador.

My trip to Ecuador was even more significant because of my experience within the home stay. I stayed with a host family for three weeks, learning their culture and customs and developing a connection with my new family. I shared many incredible memories with my host family, and I will never forget their hospitality. I only hope that one day I can return to Ecuador and visit my Ecuadorian family.

El Oriente: Trekking Through the Rainforest

During my first week in Ecuador, the group embarked on a 5 day trip through the Amazon Rainforest. Along the way, we learned about the incredible ecosystem of the rainforest.

Los Galapagos: Darwin's Land

During my 5 day trip to the Galapagos, I lived on a boat called the "Golondrina" and traveled to different islands in the Galapagos. The amount of wildlife and the evolutionary adaptations of the Galapagos were incredible to see. I greatly enjoyed seeing animals like the blue-footed boobie, the galapagos finch, sea lions, and penguins.

The Homestay: A New Experience

During the homestay, I was challenged to step outside of my normal comfort zone and learns the customs and traditions of a new society. I met new people and developed a deep relationship, one I will never forget. I still write with my family, and hope to visit them again one day.

Mount Chimborazo: Snow in Ecuador???

I was surprised to learn that Ecuador had an extremely large mountain, much less snow. Mount Chimborazo is one of the highest peaks in the world, and I was able to hike up about half of it. It was awesome to see snow, and we even had a snowball fight!

Community Service: La Guarderia

I was extremely happy that I had an opportunity to give back to the community while in Ecuador. I was able to help rebuild and paint a children's daycare in my home stay city of Riobamba.
