Adventures Abroad: McLean in Spain, 2011: McLean Hudson

Monday, June 27, I arrived in Spain hardly aware that in a month I would be finishing up one of the greatest experiences of my life. But all that in due time...For now I will start with Madrid.

We arrived at Hotel Señorial Tuesday, June 28, in the afternoon. Before we had unpacked, we were sent into the city to find la Plaza Mayor. We were all excited to be on our own and putting our Spanish to the test so soon, but jet lag and sleep deprivation limited our enthusiasm...

Once back at the hotel, my new roommate Chuck and I were looking forward to some much needed sleep. Very, very quickly, we discovered that our room was infested with beetles. This was cause for some worry among our group for the rest of our time in Madrid, but we changed rooms and everything was fine. Except for the air conditioning. Or lack there of. It was not till our third of three nights in Hotel Señorial that the a/c worked, and we spent much of our nights either opening the windows for fresh, slightly cooler air, or shutting them due to the ever present drunks on the streets of Madrid.

I am afraid I'm casting a dark light on my initial experiences so let me clarify-these minor troubles were barely an inconvenience to the great fun our group had from the moment we arrived in Spain. Now that I sit in an air conditioned room, the problems of the first days in Madrid are only funny memories to reminisce about with my group members.
